In January 2002, it was decided to integrate the activities of the 3 branches of the Department under one roof in the interests of the consumer movement so that Consumers could receive effective service and support from a single point.
The computation and computer networking of the consumer Forums “CONFONET”
in the State has been completed to provide I.T. Solution in order to promote
e-governance, transparency, efficiency
and systematizing the working of all the 21 District Forums
and State Commission to achieve time bound delivery of justice to the consumers.
The Consumer Affairs Department has initiated construction of a 5 storied building in which the Secretariat, Directorate of CA & FBP, Kolkata Unit – I & II Forum will be housed. F & S Department has agreed to spare more of less 8,000 sft of land in the premises.
The Netaji National Institute for Consumer Education (NNICE)
is being set up at Chinsurah, Hooghly. It’s objective is to provide training to members of NGOs and Government functionaries on consumer protection from through out the country. The institution is expected to start functioning in 2009.
A Food Testing Laboratory is going to be set up soon in Siliguri. It would conduct chemical and other tests on various food items including tea, milk products, processed food and vegetables, non-alcoholic beverages etc. from adulteration perspective.
The Consumer Affairs Department is a relatively new department charged with the responsibility of protecting interests of consumers. Consumer Forums are an innovative arrangement for providing consumer friendly mechanism for redressal of consumer tasks of verifying weights and measures and enforcement of the three related Acts/Rules. Consumer awareness is an important task. The Department utilises various modalities – state level activities, print and electronic media, publications, consumers clubs in schools and a large number of local level programmes by government functionaries, panchayats, municipalities and voluntary sector – for increasing consumer awareness.
