The Department of
Consumers Affairs,Goverment of West Bengal is responsible for the
protection of interests of the consumers in West Bengal .
|

TO ACHIEVE THESE OBJECTIVES THE
DEPARTMENT -
|
|
|
has a Directorate of Consumer Affairs and Fair
Business practices with its branches(three Divisional Offices one each
in a Division, 25 Regional Offices in the districts including 5 Regional Offices
in kolkata and two in sub-divisions at Barrackpur and Durgapur)in all districts
in the State, which medi- ate between the manufacturer / seller / service providerand
the consumers.It also undertakes programme for generation of consumer awareness.

has Fora in all districts including two
in Kolkata,two in district of Darjeeling including one at Siliguri and a Circuit
Bench at Alipurduar in Jalpaiguri district which hear and decide cases under
the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.

|
has its Directorate of Legal Metrology
in Kolkata along with a laboratory and its field offices in all districts which
monitors weights and measures under the Standards of Weights and Measures Act,1976
and deals with the violation under the Standards of Weights and Measures Rules,
1977 (Packaged Commodities).

|
|
has One State Commission established
under section 9(b) of the Consumer Protection Act,1986 and 21 district
forums established under section 9(a) of the Consumer Protection Act,1986
to adjudicate consumer disputes.

|
|
assists NGOs and VCOs
to speed up awareness among the consumers.
|
|
|
Launches Publicity through hoarding,
Television serials, live phone-in programs on Doordarshan,Akashvani,Kiosks,Advertisement
in important railway stations and post offices etc.
